Shipman Historic District Meeting

Shipman Historic District PowerPoint

Nelson County and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources have partnered to identify and document historic properties in the community of Shipman. The information collected during this survey will be used to determine the eligibility of a National Register of Historic Places historic district in Shipman. You are receiving this letter because your property falls within the potential historic district boundaries.

You are cordially invited to a meeting to introduce the project and meet the working group. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 6:00 pm at the Nelson Memorial Library, 8521 Thomas Nelson Highway, Lovingston, Virginia 22949.

Hill Studio, out of Roanoke, has been hired to conduct the fieldwork required to carry out the historic survey and prepare the associated eligibility documentation for the approximately 60 historic properties in this area. The first round of field work will begin in early December, prior to the January meeting.

This survey does not in any way change what owners can do with their property; it does not impose restrictions from federal, state, or local levels of government. The survey effort will take place from the Public Right of Way and consist of limited photographs of building exteriors. Residents are under no obligation to allow access to their property. This phase of the project will not result in a National Register of Historic Places listing, although it is hoped that a historic district will be identified and evaluated for potential future listing on the National Register. Further public input will be sought before a historic district nomination is prepared.

Should you require additional information on the historic survey project then, please contact Maureen Kelley, (434) 263-7015 or Michael Pulice, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, at (540) 387-5443.

Respectfully,
