The Planning & Zoning Department administers the comprehensive land use plan, zoning and subdivision ordinances, provides geographical information and mapping services and maintains official street names and addresses in the unincorporated areas of the County.
The Nelson County Department of Planning & Zoning strategically works to:
- protect and strengthen the County’s special sense of place and extremely high quality of life;
- facilitate the growth of a strong local economy;
- protect and enhance property values;
- meet the Code of Virginia requirements to, “improve the public health, safety, convenience, [and] welfare of its citizens,” (15.2-2200) and to, “facilitate the creation of a convenient, attractive, and harmonious community…” (15.2-2283).
Within the guidance of the Board of Supervisors, the Department collaborates with all other County Departments and works with a wide variety of local and regional stakeholders. These working relationships are all oriented towards helping the Nelson County community successfully pursue a more prosperous and more sustainable future.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
In accordance with Volume 3A, Title 15.2, Counties, Cities and Towns, of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended, and pursuant to Section 15.2-2204, Section 15.2-2285, Section 15.2-2310, and Section 15.2-4307, the Nelson County Planning Commission hereby gives notice that a Public Hearing will start at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2013 in the Board of Supervisors meeting room on the fourth floor of the Nelson County Courthouse located at 84 Courthouse Square, Lovingston, Virginia, for the following:
Public Hearing
1. Special Use Permit # 2013-002 , Nelson County Community Development Foundation
Consideration of an application by NCCDF, P.O. Box 57, Lovingston, VA, for a Special Use
Permit to allow for construction of multifamily housing units (2) on 11.7 acres of property zoned
A-1 (Agricultural), further identified as Tax Map 68-A-57, Shipman, VA.
Following the hearing, the Planning Commission may vote on a resolution or ordinance to adopt, modify, or reject an item. The items requiring Board of Supervisors’ review and approval will be forwarded for action by the Board, which may adopt a resolution or ordinance to approve, modify, or reject an item.
The Nelson County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on June 11, 2013 at 7:00 o’clock P.M. on those items referred to it by the Planning Commission. The meeting will be held at the location listed above. The following items are scheduled to be considered:
