Traffic Load-In Plan

Thursday and Friday

According to the traffic plan, arriving traffic will be split about 50/50 on Thursday and Friday.

Certain traffic and camping types will be directed off of Route 29 onto the 29 Business Route (Front Street) at the traffic signal at Lovingston. From there, traffic will be directed right onto James River Road, then right onto Oak Ridge Road, then right into the Gate 6 toll booths which are located on the north side of Oak Ridge Road.

The remaining Traffic will access the site from the south on Route 29.  Traffic arriving from the north (coming from Charlottesville)  will be directed past Oak Ridge Road approximately 4 miles to a U-turn (near Morse lane and Rose Mill Rd) then merged with northbound traffic. Following the southbound U-turn and merging of traffic, northbound event traffic will be directed into the eastern lane (right lane) and northbound through traffic will be directed into the western ( left) lane via signage and Variable Message Signs.

Northbound Event Traffic (coming from Lynchburg)  will then be directed to exit Route 29 (Thomas Nelson Highway) at Arrington Road, then directed to make a left onto Diggs Mt Road, and then into Gate 2 where stacking will be provided on the racetrack.

Saturday and Sunday Event Load-In Plans

95% of attendees are expected to arrive on Thursday and Friday and there will be minimal arrivals/day parking traffic on Saturday and Sunday. Therefore, the James River Road route will be eliminated, and all traffic will be directed to exit US 29 NB at Oak Ridge Road. US 29 SB traffic will still need to pass Oak Ridge Road, make a U-turn to merge with US 29 NB traffic, then exit via Oak Ridge Road. However, the U-turn will be moved approximately 3 miles north (near Lena Rose LN).

There are several layers of alternate(backup) traffic plans if the need arises.

Road Closures

Oak Ridge Road Closures/Local Access:

Oak Ridge Road will be “Closed to Thru Traffic” from Diggs Mt Road to Wilson Road during peak ingress, from Thursday and Friday from 7am to 8pm. However, local residents will be allowed access.

Oak Ridge Road eastbound between US 29 and Diggs Mt Road will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles and school buses on Thursday and Friday from 7am to 8pm.

Diggs Mt Road Road Closure

Diggs Mountain Road will be “Closed to Thru Traffic” during peak ingress on Thursday and Friday from 7am to 8pm. A Type III barricade and Road Closed to Thru Traffic sign will be placed near the intersection of Diggs Mt Rd and Arrington Road.

As To be expected,  a number of crossovers on Rt 29 will be closed and or affected for part or all of the event. Controllers are poised to assist all school Ingress and Egress operations for the duration of the event, to ensure smooth and safe access for all.

Traffic Egress Plan

To alleviate traffic at the Oak Ridge Road and US 29 cross-over, traffic will be directed in heading south to exit west on Oak Ridge Road, then south on Diggs Mt Road to Arrington Road, and

back to US 29 via signage and social media. Northbound traffic will be encouraged to exit west on Oak Ridge Road to US 29.
