Residential Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Days

PLEASE NOTE: The Nelson County Transfer Station in Arrington, VA is not collecting any Residential Household Hazardous Waste.

The special Household Hazardous Waste Collection event will take place at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center located at 4576 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903 from 9am-3pm on the following dates:

  • Spring 2026
    • Friday, April 17, 2026
    • Saturday, April 18, 2026
  • Fall 2026
    • Friday, September 18, 2026
    • Saturday, September 19, 2026

HHW collections are free only to residents of Albemarle County, Charlottesville, and Town of Scottsville, and available to Nelson County residents who obtain a voucher from Nelson County government.

Nelson County residents can obtain vouchers at any of the staffed collection sites, County Administration office or contact Sue Baker, Recycling Coordinator, at .

Accepted Items

Each year the RSWA holds a large-scale household hazardous waste collection day. On this day, RSWA accepts additional hazardous substances and ensures that they are properly categorized and directed to a permitted off-site hazardous substance management location. The materials accepted on this day include:

  • Acids
  • Adhesives
  • Antifreeze
  • Batteries
  • CFLs
  • Floor and furniture polish
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Gasoline
  • Household cleaners
  • Kerosene
  • Motor oil
  • Paint and paint-related products and solvents
  • Pesticides

Items We Cannot Accept

  • Radioactive waste (including smoke detectors)
  • Medical waste (syringes, sharps, etc.)
  • Explosives
  • Ammunition
  • Prescription medicine and/or drugs
  • Most compressed gas cylinders
  • Type A or B organic peroxides
