TEMPORARY CLOSURE NOTICE FOR TIPPING FLOOR REPAIRS STARING ON APRIL 22, 2026
The Nelson County Transfer Station will be closed starting on April 22, 2026 and is anticipated to remain closed for repairs through May 31, 2026. As of April 22nd and during the repair period, our neighbors in Amherst County will be accepting the waste of Nelson County businesses at their landfill located at 715 Kentmoor Farm Road, Madison Heights VA 24572, which is open during the hours of M-F 8 am – 4pm, Saturdays 8am-12pm, and closed on Sundays. They will also accept the larger waste of our citizens that cannot be disposed of at our collection sites or be recycled in the re-use sheds, which will remain open on their regular schedule. Amherst County WILL NOT accept our waste before April 22nd.
If you choose to take waste to the Amherst Landfill, please be prepared to provide identification showing that you are a business account-holder or citizen from Nelson County, in order to be allowed to use the facility under the “Nelson Account” – you will not be expected to pay at the time of your trip; but will be billed by Nelson County at a later date.

Monday through Friday: 8am to 3:30pm
Saturday: 8am to 11:45am
Closed on Sundays
Additional closings include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Please note: If any of the above holidays fall on a Friday or a Monday, the Transfer Station will be closed on the Saturday that falls within that weekend. The facility may also be closed when snow and ice create unsafe conditions. During inclement weather, call the facility to check on operational status.
Tipping Fees
Commercial and residential trash is accepted during operating hours.
A tipping fee of $55/ton is charged for commercial trash (scales measure in 20 pound increments). Call for current rates on tires. The County no longer accepts commercial tires for disposal, only residential. Construction fees are charged for both residents and commercial entities.
Disposal of Household Items
Household items such as mattresses, box springs, furniture, kitchen appliances, washers, and dryers should be taken to the Transfer Station. PLEASE do not drop these items off at any of the Collection Centers.
Recycling & Solid Waste Collection Centers
Nelson County offers multiple locations for residents to drop off recycling and solid waste. Use of County facilities is limited to persons who either reside in Nelson County or who own real estate property in the County. VIEW LIST OF CENTERS

From Lovingston, go south on U.S. 29 for approximately 8 miles. Turn east (left) on Morse Lane (VSH 748). Go 1 mile to end of road.
