The Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) provides services for seniors and their families, such as, urgently needed health care and nutrition programs, as well as intergenerational programs, that promote healthy aging in Central Virginia. JABA’s mission is to promote, establish and preserve sustainable communities for healthy aging that benefit individuals and families of all ages.
Nelson Community Center
JABA’s Nelson Community Center, (in the Nelson Community Center), is open for meals, activities, field trips and socializing on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. A hot lunch is served on the days the center is open. In addition, home delivered meals and food bags are distributed out of the center to elders in the area. JABA’s Nelson Community Center is staffed with a nurse, center manager, and two geriatric case managers are available to visit as needed. The nurse, working closely with the clients, caregivers and primary physicians, provides screenings, monitoring of ongoing health conditions, prescription assistance and counseling, treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, and other services. JABA’s geriatric case managers can provide an assessment for seniors followed by assistance in locating resources from JABA or the community-at-large. These services assist in enabling clients to live independently for as long as possible. Examples of service include: the provision of home delivered meals, supplying Ensure, access to medical equipment, referrals to home health-care providers, and friendly visitors. The case managers visit the center and make home visits, in addition to seeing clients in their offices.
JABA provides intergenerational volunteer opportunities, both at the center and in the community at large. JABA’s Volunteer program improves lives, strengthens the community, and fosters civic engagement.
