Registrar

The Office of General Registrar and Electoral Board of the County of Nelson Virginia strive to promote the highest level of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth by providing equitable opportunities to register and vote; and by maintaining accurate records relating to voter registration, elections, election officials, and candidates. We are committed to promoting democracy and public trust in our endeavors to ensure fair and impartial elections.

Electoral Board and General Registrar

The Electoral Board is composed of three members who are appointed by a majority of Circuit Court Judges serving Nelson. They serve a three-year staggered term. Representation is given to the “…two political parties having the the highest and next to highest number of votes in the Commonwealth for Governor at the last preceding gubernatorial election.” Virginia Election Law 24.2-106

The Electoral Board appoints the General Registrar who serves a four-year term. The General Registrar and Assistant Registrar are responsible for registering people to vote, maintaining official registration records, educating the public about voter registration, and together with the Electoral Board and Officers of Election, administering elections for the County of Nelson.

The board meets every third Thursday at 10:00 am at the Voter Registration Office to conduct regular business.

June 11, 2013

Democratic Party Primary Election

A Democratic Party Primary Election will be held on June 11, 2013, in Nelson County. The Constitution of Virginia requires that voters be registered in the precinct in which they live in order to be qualified to vote.
The deadline to register to vote in this election is Monday, may 20, 2013. Registered voters who need to change their address may do so by completing, signing, and submitting a voter registration application or their voter card. The deadline to change registration information prior to the General Election is Monday, May 20, 2013. If a registered voter’s address has changed, the voter should update his or her address to ensure he or she remains qualified to vote.
Any qualified resident of Virginia may apply for voter registration or update his or her registration information at the

• 9:00 AM– 5:00 PM
Qualified residents who will be at least 18 years of age on or before November 6, 2012, may register and vote in the General Election. Voters may check their voter registration information online at www.sbe.virginia.gov.
FINAL DAY TO APPLY FOR AN ABSENTEE BALLOT:
• By mail: Tuesday, June 4, 2013, by 5 PM
• In person: Saturday, June 8, 2013, by 5 PM
The Registrar’s Office will be open for Absentee Voting on Saturday, June 8, 2013, 9:00 AM– 5:00 PM. Applications for registration and absentee ballots, as well as sample ballots, will be made available at the Voter Registrar’s Office, by calling the Registrar’s Office at 434-263-4068 or on the Registrar’s website at www.nelsoncounty.com/agencies/registrar
The law permits emergency absentee voting in a few, very limited situations until 2 PM on Monday, June 10, 2013. For more information on emergency absentee voting, call the Registrar’s Office at 434-263-4068.
