Registrar

Office of General Registrar and Electoral Board of the County of Nelson Virginia strive to promote the highest level of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth by providing equitable opportunities to register and vote; and by maintaining accurate records relating to voter registration, elections, election officials, and candidates. We are committed to promoting democracy and public trust in our endeavors to ensure fair and impartial elections.

Electoral Board and General Registrar

The Electoral Board is composed of three members who are appointed by a majority of Circuit Court Judges serving Nelson. They serve a three-year staggered term. Representation is given to the “…two political parties having the the highest and next to highest number of votes in the Commonwealth for Governor at the last preceding gubernatorial election.” Virginia Election Law 24.2-106

The Electoral Board appoints the General Registrar who serves a four-year term. The General Registrar and Assistant Registrar are responsible for registering people to vote, maintaining official registration records, educating the public about voter registration, and together with the Electoral Board and Officers of Election, administering elections for the County of Nelson.

June 11, 2019 – Republican Primary Election for House of Delegates 20th District

The deadline to register to vote in this election is Monday, May 20, 2019.

*The constitution of Virginia requires that voters be registered in the precinct in which they live in order to be qualified to vote. Qualified residents who will be at least 18 years of age on or before November 5, 2019, may register to vote.

To register to vote, you must complete a voter registration application. To fill out the online application form or download a blank mail-in voter registration application and complete it by hand go to www.vote.virginia.gov.

Voters may complete registration applications in person at a local election official office, DMV  and other Virginia governmental agencies.

*Registered voters who need to change their address may  submit a voter registration application, the voter card, or on-line at www.vote.virginia.gov.

The deadline to change registration information prior to the June Primary Election is May 20, 2019. 

If a registered voter’s address has changed, the voter should update their

address to ensure they remain qualified to vote.

*Voters may check their voter registration information online at www.vote.virginia.gov/search .

*The following offices are up for election in the Nov.5, 2019 General and Special Elections: Virginia Senate, House of Delegates for 20th and 59th Districts, Member Board of Supervisors and School Board Member for South & West Districts. Special Election for East District School Board Member.

*Deadline to Apply In Person:  Saturday, June 8, 2019

*Polling places open at 6:00am and close at 7:00pm

Polling Hours

On any election, whether General, Primary, or Special – the polls are required to open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.
