Nelson County offers multiple locations for residents to drop off recycling and solid waste. Use of County facilities is limited to persons who either reside in Nelson County or who own real estate property in the County. Visitors to all staffed centers must display a County decal. All staffed centers are open 6 days a week, 7 am until 7 pm. They are closed on Mondays. They are also closed January 1, July 4, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Sites may be closed on short notice on days when snow or ice create unsafe conditions, or during local power outages.

Re-Use Shed
Except for Wintergarden, all the sites have a Re-Use Shed for the exchange of free items. At the staffed sites, please speak with an attendant before leaving items in the shed.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronic Waste
There are four collection days for HHW each year at the Region 2000 Landfill in Lynchburg. The dates are always the second Saturday in April, June, August, and October. Electronics are also accepted for recycling at these events. Hours are 8am to noon. Participation is free for Nelson residents and land-owners who obtain a voucher from the Nelson Solid Waste & Recycling office. Driving instructions to the landfill and complete information on acceptable items are printed on the voucher forms. An HHW event is also held at the Ivy Materials Utilization Center in Albemarle County every spring and sometimes fall. The dates for the events in Ivy change from year to year.
