Building Inspections Process

Building Permit Application Checklist

For Construction Of Single Family Dwellings, Additions and Associated Accessory Structures


Two sets of construction drawings/plans with the following information:

  1. Dimensioned foundation plan
  2. Dimensioned floor plan indicating door & window sizes
  3. Typical Cross section view indicating size of materials to be used in construction from footing thru roof

Plans for these types of structures do not ordinarily require the services of an architect or engineer unless alternative methods & materials are used. Where a seal is not present, the plans MUST be signed by the individual (not the Company) responsible.

For the design, including their address and occupation:

  • ONE COPY OF A PLAT OF THE PROPERTY (This may be a formal plat or hand drawn sketch of the property. Indicate the location of the proposed structure & distances to the property lines & right-of-way. Also indicate location and use of all other existing buildings on property.)
  • ONE COPY OF THE WATER SUPPLY AND/OR SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION PERMIT which is issued by the Nelson County Health Department. You can obtain a copy of that document by calling the Health Department at 434-263-4297.
  • AN AGREEMENT IN LIEU OF A PLAN (LAND DISTURBING PERMIT) FOR ALL REGULATED LAND DISTURBING ACTIVITY
  • PROVIDE THE NAME OF THE LICENSED CONTRACTOR WHO WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WORK OR IF THE OWNER IS ACTING AS CONTRACTOR, COMPLETE & SIGN THE AFFIDAVIT

Building Permit Fees

Minimum fee for projects valued at not over $5,000. . . . . . . . $ 25.00
Projects valued over $5,000 . . . . . . . . . . . $5.00 per $1,000 of value
Agreement in Lieu of a Plan (Land Disturbing) . . . . . . . . . . . .$35-450
(A 2% Levy Fee is added to all Building Permit fees as per the State)
